Team Genesis

Co-founder, CFO, finance and entrepreneurship

I co-founded Team Genesis with Artin Javadi to bring students together around synthetic biology, research, and education. My work focuses on finding the funding, partnerships, and resources the team needs, and communicating our project to people outside it.

A team needs a place to work, people who can advise it, a budget, and a way to keep moving when a promising opportunity falls through. I learned to follow up, ask questions, and be clear about what support had actually been confirmed.

Diaprobe

Business development, financial modeling, and prototype support · Team Minerva

My father's experience with dialysis helped inspire my interest in Diaprobe, a proposed wearable for blood-pressure changes during dialysis. I built a five-year financial model and worked through pricing, manufacturing, and ongoing support. Materials were only part of the cost: a clinic would also weigh software, support, and what it needs before trying a new device.

Stage: proposed, unvalidated device. The financial model contains projections.

Finance, entrepreneurship, and education

A research-stage project exploring a protective formulation for beneficial fungi associated with plant roots. I work on potential users, costs, financial assumptions, and the evidence needed before it could become a product.

Stage: research and development. Customers and uses are still being explored.

I teach children at the Boys & Girls Club of Fullerton and co-teach adults through Financial Peace University. One favorite moment: a fifth grader asked how I personally invested, which pushed me to explain not just the concept but how I make my own decisions.

Story

Thinking beyond the idea itself

Hi, I'm Seungwoo. I'm interested in finance, entrepreneurship, and learning how ideas can become useful to people.

I co-founded Team Genesis, a student-led iGEM team, and worked on Diaprobe, a proposed dialysis-monitoring device inspired in part by my family's experience. Both projects made me think beyond the idea itself: what it costs, who it is for, and what has to happen before someone can actually use it.

I also teach financial literacy to children and adults, study companies and investments, and build financial models. I enjoy taking something that seems complicated and breaking it down into smaller decisions people can understand.

Pushing my limits through discipline

Outside my projects

I started going to the gym in middle school because I was insecure, and stayed because I liked seeing myself improve. I coached myself into competitive bodybuilding, tracked my training, and learned to appreciate small improvements over time.

Classic Physique competitor, 4th place at the OCB Slayer Classic. I also like rock climbing, hiking, fishing, traveling, and I taught myself to fix phone screens.
